Welcome

Welcome to Quaker Cemetery. Located in historic Camden, South Carolina.  It offers a glimpse into the rich heritage of the Palmetto State and it is the final resting place of  politicians, generals, war heroes, and loved ones of countless Camden area families.

Visitors are always welcome.

Our History

Early Quaker settlers established themselves about the site of Camden first known as Pine Tree Hill, about the year 1750. One of the Sect, Samuel Wyly, in 1759 conveyed 4 acres of land for a period of 999 years, for a rental of “One Pepper Corn Per Year” to the Quakers for their house of worship and burying ground. Several Quakers are buried here and are identified by the brick arched graves with no headstones.

The cemetery has grown from four acres to its present-day size of approximately 50 acres. This was accomplished through gifts, purchases and deeded property. In 1874 the town of Camden deeded the acreage which was their property to the Quaker Cemetery Association.

The Association consists of nine board members elected by the Association members plus a full-time Director who manages the operation of the Cemetery. There are maintenance workers as well.

The Cemetery is rich in history. There are physicians, ministers, early Quakers, prominent merchants, men of foreign birth, men of northern birth, veterans of wars since the American Revolution.

In 1915 the property known as the Old Presbyterian Cemetery was deeded to the Quaker Cemetery. It now has a few old Camden family graves plus the Revolutionary War Park.

Fundraising and Sustainability

To accomplish our mission effectively, Quaker Guardian Angels is our dedicated partner for those donors seeking a 501(c)3 status to raise funds to support our preservation and educational initiatives. Quaker Guardian Angels pledges to operate transparently and responsibly, ensuring that every dollar donated is used efficiently to achieve our goals. We work together to repair dated fencing and/or gates, enhance security monitoring, scan older documents, repair plumbing for irrigation, enhance landscaping and more.

"Let us come together to preserve Quaker Cemetery, a beacon of our rich history and collective memory. Through our unwavering dedication and generosity, we can ensure this hallowed ground remains a lasting testament to our heritage. Together, we honor the lives and stories of those who rest here, safeguarding the legacy that shapes our community's heart and soul."
